Chemistry Department Awards & Scholarships


Qualified students must complete the Academic Achievement Award Application to apply for all scholarships and awards. 

Applications will be accepted between March 1 and April 25th for the current year.

Selection Procedures
  • The selection committee is the existing Scholarship Committee or is appointed by the department chair from members of the Chemistry Department.
  • The most qualified candidate will be selected, and a candidate need not necessarily be accepted each year.

Dr. Barrie Logan served in our department from 1972-2006 and passionately contributed to the success of our students, department, and college.

 

Minimum Qualifications and Terms of Award
  • Student must have completed CHEM 60 in the preceding Fall or Winter semester or academic year at Los Angeles Pierce College

 

Basis of Selection
  • Exceptional performance in CHEM 60 at Los Angeles Pierce College
  • Overall GPA at Los Angeles Pierce College is 3.5+ and an "A" grade in CHEM 60
  • Additional desirable aspects:
    1. Consideration of any other special citation and meritorious accomplishments;
    2. Contributions to the chemistry program: department student worker, chemistry representative to student government, special assistance to member of staff, other; and/or
    3. Personal qualities for which the college can justly be proud.
       
Barrie Logan Award for Excellence in Introductory Chemistry Recipient(s)

Minimum Qualifications and Terms of Award
  • Student is a science major and has completed CHEM 101.
  • Student has been a department worker for one year.
  • Student does not need to be a transferring or graduating student.
     
Basis of Selection
  • A strong and unselfish commitment to the chemistry department, its educational program, and its students.
  • A very responsible student with integrity, who is hardworking and takes pride in his/her job.
  • Contribution to the chemistry program such as:
    1. special assistance to faculty members,
    2. chemistry representation in student government, and/or
    3. exceptional support for fellow chemistry students.

Dan W. Covey Memorial Returning Student Scholarship Application

** Note: This application includes the submission of a resume and a personal statement. **
 

Minimum Qualifications
  • The student has returned to continue their education by enrolling at Los Angeles Pierce College after being out of school for some time.
  • The student has taken at least a year of chemistry at Los Angeles Pierce College.
  • Students with Bachelor’s degrees are not eligible for the award.
     
Basis of Selection
  • The student, since returning, has shown perseverance and considerable personal and intellectual growth at Los Angeles Pierce College.
  • The student intends to transfer to an accredited four year institution.
  • Additional considerations:
    1. Personal circumstances under which the student has returned to school.
    2. Any special awards or achievements that have been accomplished by the student.

  • Exceptional performance in CHEM 211.
  • Overall 3.5 GPA in transferable units and a 3.7 GPA in all chemistry courses. Further consideration will be given to courses completed in mathematics and science.
  • Additional favorable aspects:
    1. Consideration of any other special citation and meritorious accomplishments.
    2. Contributions to the chemistry program: department student worker, chemistry representative to student government, special assistance to member of staff, other.
    3. Personal qualities for which the college can justly be proud.

Minimum Qualification and Terms of Award
  • Student must have completed Chemistry 101, 102, 211, and be completed or currently enrolled in either CHEM 212 or CHEM 221 at Los Angeles Pierce College.
  • Student is graduating or has completed 60 or more transferable units and has been accepted as a transfer student at a four year institution to continue studies as a chemistry major, biochemistry major, chemical engineering major in a field requiring upper division chemistry (medicine, veterinary science, pharmacy, teaching, etc.)
     
Basis of Selection
  • Exceptional performance in Chemistry 101, 102, 211, 212 and/or 221.
  • Overall 3.5 GPA in transferable units and a 3.7 GPA in all chemistry courses taken at Los Angeles Pierce College. Performance in second year courses will be more important. Further consideration will be given to courses completed in mathematics and science.
  • Additional desirable aspects:
    1. Consideration of any other special citation and meritorious accomplishments.
    2. Contributions to the chemistry program: department student worker, chemistry representative to student government, special assistance to member of staff, other.
    3. Personal qualities for which the college can justly be proud.

External Scholarships

Students are also encouraged to apply to external scholarships. Los Angeles Pierce College students have been successful in award applications.

ACS Scholars Award

African American, Native American and Hispanic students planning to study full time in a chemically related field may be eligible to apply.

Applications are open annually on December 1st, and the deadline is March 1st the following year for each application cycle. 

The results are announced each year on May 15th.
