L.A. Pierce College Breaks Ground on Academic West Building

Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) reached another milestone on Friday, February 21, 2025, with the groundbreaking of the Academic West Building. Nearly 100 attendees gathered to celebrate the start of construction, including guests from the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), local government, students and faculty.

LAPC President Aracely Aguiar emphasized the building’s role in advancing arts, media, and social sciences education. Distinguished speakers included LACCD Interim Chancellor Alberto Roman and Vice Chancellor and Chief Facilities Executive Leigh Sata, who highlighted the District’s commitment to student success, equity, and sustainability. Local representatives in attendance and showing support for the project included LAUSD Board Member Nick Melvoin and Community Engagement Officer Rachel Sherman, Field Representative Jack Trent-Dorfman from the Office of Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel and representatives from Los Angeles City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield’s office.  

Faculty members and department chairs shared their excitement for the new facility and its impact on academic programs. Melody Cooper (Art & Architecture), Cara Gillis (Philosophy & Sociology), and Jill Connelly (Media Arts) spoke about how the new 34,900-square-foot building—featuring state-of-the-art classrooms, collaborative spaces, a darkroom suite, and a radio station—will elevate hands-on learning and foster innovation.

Following the ceremonial first turn of the soil, guests gathered for a reception in the Great Hall, where they continued discussions on LAPC’s bright future. With solar panels, energy-efficient design, and all-electric infrastructure, Academic West will serve as a model for sustainable, student-centered learning.
