COURSES
Course Description: Students learn the necessary skills to succeed in college. Emphasis is placed on college policies and procedures, campus services and resources, study skills and time management. Additional topics include: certificate, associate degree requirements, and transfer admission requirements.
Note: No Credit if taken after Counseling 40 or Personal Development 40. Credit only given for either Counseling 1 or Personal Development 1, but not both.
Course Student Learning Outcome (SLO): Time Management: Students will be able to use time management strategies to develop a weekly schedule that supports their academic goals.
A few words from C1 Instructors: Counseling 1 is designed to be an orientation type course for students who would like an overview of the services and policies at Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC). A few study skills are included, but the objective is to introduce the student to what LAPC has to offer.
Course Description: Students will learn the process of career planning. The emphasis is on learning about yourself and the world of work and how to use this information in career planning. This course also acquaints the students with college services, personnel, curricula, and student activities.
Note: Credit only given for either Counseling 8 or Personal Development 8, but not both.
Course Student Learning Outcome (SLO)s:
- Students will demonstrate an increase in their reflective abilities and level of self-knowledge by identifying their primary values, skills, and personality type.
- Students will be able to analyze the job market and potential career choices in relation to their skills, values, and personality type.
- Students will develop a systematic plan to prepare them for their chosen career.
A few words from Counseling 8 Instructors: Counseling 8 is an 8-week course that will help students explore and determine career options while keeping their skills, personality, interests, and experiences in mind. This class will also introduce you to career research and other career related activities such as a professional interview.
Course Description: Students are introduced to the role of higher education in society and to their role as students. Students explore personal attributes needed for college success, critical thinking and effective study strategies, relating to others in a diverse world, the career planning and decision making process, and transfer and educational planning. This course will also provide students with an overview of campus resources and policies.
Note: Credit only given for either Counseling 20 or Personal Development 20, but not both. UC Credit Limit: 20 and 40 combined. Maximum credit one course.
Course Student Learning Outcome (SLO)s: By the end of the term, 60% of students will be able to choose a major and develop an educational plan that is consistent with their career goals.
A few words from Counseling 20 Instructors: This is a full semester course that is a combination of Counseling 8 and Counseling 40.The first half of the semester will consist of study skills such as, time management and note taking. The second half will be career focused where activities such as career assessments, resume building and interview skills are studied.
Course Description: This course is an introduction to the transfer process. It is designed to enable students to become active participants in planning their long-term educational and career goals and will provide students with an understanding of the process and the requirements for transferring to a four-year college or university. These goals will enable the student to develop a transfer educational plan and to be prepared to apply to a transfer institution. The course will consist of lecture, use of internet resources, guest speakers and student assignments.
Course Description: This course introduces students to the study of the educational, psychological, intellectual, social, and health-related factors that impact lifelong learning, well-being, and success. Students engage topics such as motivation, critical thinking, learning strategies, time management, communication strategies, career exploration and educational planning by means of active learning strategies such as classroom activities and discussions, peer presentations, real world scenarios and collaborative problem solving assignments.

A few words from Counseling 40 Instructors: Counseling 40 is a comprehensive study skills and success course. It covers some career exploration (similar to Counseling 8 and 20) but its primary focus is essential student success skills such as learning styles, note taking, reading and understanding education planning.
