Cloud Computing at Pierce

Cloud Computing is the on-demand delivery of Information Technology (IT) resources and services via the Internet. If you have watched/streamed any video content online from providers such as Netflix or sports channels you have used the cloud, many of the apps in your phone use the cloud to host their services. The Pierce Course Management System, Canvas, uses Amazon Web Services to deliver online, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses to you.

Cloud computing is now the new normal. Companies no longer ask if they are moving to the Cloud but when. Next they ask; do we have the personnel with the right skill set for that type of job. Amazon is the biggest providers of cloud resources and services.

Los Angeles Pierce College, in partnership with Amazon, is preparing students with classes that will enable them to gain the right skills set to become Amazon Web Services (AWS) certified. Certified AWS Architects and Developers can receive an average salary of more than $115,000.

Start by taking CO INFO 590, Introduction to Cloud this Fall. It starts on October 22, 2018. CO INFO 590 prepares you for AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification. This certification makes you eligible for entry level, help-desk type of jobs in cloud computing. Follow up with CO INFO 591, Cloud Computing Architecture; and CO INFO 592, Security in the Cloud in Spring 2019. These two courses prepare you for the AWS Solution Architect Associate Certification test and Systems Administration level jobs.

Certificate Programs: These options give students specific skills in specific technologies and require a minimum of 12 units (4 courses or more). Many of them can be completed in as little as two semesters and provide a pathway to entry, and some mid-level positions in the computer industry.

Associate’s Degrees: These options provide a greater range of skills but have specific focus. We offer associate’s degrees in Programming for Computer Science, Programming for Business, and Computer and Networking Technologies. The associate’s degree in Programming for Computer Science is specifically formatted to help students transfer to either CSUN or UCLA Computer Science programs. While the other two provide broad ranges of skill sets for either programming for business and web environments, network support, and other good-paying jobs.

Transfer Programs: As mentioned above, our Associate’s Degree in Programming for Computer Science is formatted to help students transfer to CSUN or UCLA (and possible other options). Additionally many of our courses are accepted by other institutions offering Computer Science, Information Systems, and Information Technology degrees
