To become an elementary school teacher you may major in Child Development (at a 4-year institution) and get your teaching credential. Research in the field of Education demonstrates that teachers with a solid background in Child Development typically have higher job satisfaction and a lower burn-out rate as compared to teachers with alternate degrees. It is the belief of the child development community that the greater understanding of age typical development is a major factor.
